ideas so far:

every child is checked for magical abilities at 10 years old. if they have magic, they go to primary school to figure out their affinity/what they should specialize in, then go to that guild.

guilds/schools:

general studies/primary -- kids attend this school from ages 10-18, where they learn the basics of magic, how to control it, and figure out what their affinity is. all magicians have limited control over every type of magic, but each magician has a type of magic that they are the best at, and this is their affinity. when they turn 18, they declare what school/guild they want to join. most students choose the school of their affinity, but in some rare cases, students choose a different guild than the one they're naturally gifted in. it's possible to switch guilds as well, but the magician must have probable cause for doing so.
elemental -- the school of controlling the basic elements. fire, water, earth, air, light, dark. students generally only have an affinity with one element, and that's the element they're the best at controlling.
botany/environmental studies -- specialize in growing plants with magical properties. they study plants and the environment, breed new species of plants, and find new applications for plant species. they feed their magical energy into plants to help them grow faster, and can also take magical energy from plants to rejuvenate themselves.
combat studies -- a secondary school; after specializing in an ability and going to that school for at least 4 years, a student may choose to use their skill in the army. IE: joining elemental guild, training there for 4 years, switching to combat studies to use elemental skill in army.
practical uses -- these magicians don't have a discernible affinity, so they generally stick to the basics of magic. they use levitation, alchemy, and minor potion-making.
summoning/animal studies -- these magicians have the ability to summon familiars, or tame wild animals to be their partner. they study new uses for animal byproducts, breed/discover new species of animals, and can communicate with animals. they typically have one animal partner that they have a bond with, but can also summon other familiars if the situation requires.
invention/research-- these magicians invent magical tools that can help make everyday life easier; irrigation systems, more efficient travel, etc.
runes/ancient scripture -- these magicians study languages, and the "true language" of magic. they can craft "runes," which are small disks that are imbued with magical power. runes allow non-magicians or magicians of other affinities to use magic of a certain type; IE, allows a fire elemental to better control water, or a non-magician to levitate something, etc. these runes only last a short amount of time, or break after a few uses.
healing -- magicians that specialize in keeping people healthy. they create magical potions that can cure ailments, and can use their magic to heal small wounds. they study the human body, and study the best ways to keep people healthy.
future-sight -- these magicians usually figure out their affinity right away. they specialize in prophecies, as they often get visions of future events. they often go into combat-studies, as they can prophesize the movements of enemy troops.

i remember we talked about having guilds or something?? like a guild of magic people that help the kingdom out, cuz usually in kingdom rps there are magic users but they're like shunned and hunted or whatever

i think guilds for different magics would be cool, like maybe one for combat magic, one for practical magic (like repairing stuff/household chores kind of thing? maybe), one for researchers that study how magic works and invent stuff

kind of like how the fairies are in those tinker bell movies lmao

yeah yeah

and there can be different schools of magic
and like business built around certain magics like magicians dealing with runes and magic scripture can run special bookstores and alchemists can run potion shops and and botanists can sell magical plants/plants with special properties and they raise them like how in the harry potter movies there was the plant thing that would scream but i don't remember its name

yeah that sounds cool, and it gives a lot of variety in character design too

how about all children get tested for magical abilities when they're like 10, and if they have magic they get taken to a general studies school where they learn how to control it and find their affinity, then they choose which study of magic they want to formally study and join that guild

would people be able to choose their magic or should they be born with an ability? and are we going to have it like one magic is a magician's specialization but like they can still do amateur stuff in other magics?

i think they should be born with abilities, then when they go to the general school they figure out what that ability is and what they have the most prowess in, then they train with that and specialize in it.

and yeah, they should be able to do amateur stuff in other skills. like if they specialized in fire magic, they should still be able to do like simple levitation or whatever to move stuff around, but nothing too extreme since they didn't specialize in it

okay!

so are we having magic encouraged, like when we build up this country/world, is it magic friendly? like is everyone born with abilities, is there disparity between who gets it and who doesn't, is it hereditary, do we have a government system that enforces regulation of magic, or is it kinda like a wild and free thing

what kinds of magic schools should we have? here are a few i've thought of

general studies/primary
elemental
practical uses
botany/environmental studies
combat studies (maybe this is a secondary school? like first they go to elemental or whatever school, then decide they want to use their elemental skill in the army, then they go to combat school to learn how to apply themselves there)
summoning/animal studies
invention/research

ok i think magic should be kinda hereditary, but only in the way that if two magic users have a kid, the kid is more likely to have magic, but it's still possible to magic users to have a non-gifted child. that way people can still have their angsty characters like "wah my whole family is magic but i'm not, now i'm a villain" lol

also maybe the government would want to regulate magic like if you have magic, you have to go to school to control it, and they enforce that. cuz otherwise teenagers would be running around setting stuff on fire whenever they got excited or stuff like that lol

i don't think magic users would be higher up in society because of their magic, they just get jobs or whatever like everybody else

maybe the government could have a council? 12 members, 6 magic and 6 non-magic that help solve issues fairly

oh maybe some kingdom history could be like the first king was just a normal human, but he had a magic buddy that helped him build/save the kingdom or whatever, so from then on every king has like a right-hand man that's a magic user, kind of like an advisor

we should also have:

runes/ancient scripture
healing
maybe something to do with fortunetelling/seer abilities that could be used as tacticians in combat studies

hmmm, how incorporated into society should magic be? like, should there be a little potion shop right next to the town bakery, which is right next to a supermarket and rune store? i think nonmagic people should still have an appreciation for magic

yeah that would be cute lol, i think magic should be a pretty normal part of society for people, but they still have a healthy respect for it. i just don't want it to be the stereotypical plot where the people who have magic are hated by the regular people and that's just the whole plot

yeah, i don't want magic to be resented bc who tf is gonna hate magic like do you hate yourself damn magic is awesome
i feel like magical tools could be developed to help out society as a whole like magical tools that control irrigation systems for farming and magical transportation

what do you think the plot should be? just rping people in the guilds doing their jobs could be fun for a little bit, but after a while it would probably be boring and we'd get those posts like "so and so walked down the street looking for somebody to talk to"

hmmmm good point....i think we should avoid a prophecy route because that's p basic....should we have adventures try exploring ancient ruins to expand their knowledge? or like an expedition team with a few scholars in certain magics to investigate strange anomalies?
